¡Ya llega Halloween!
Halloween is almost here…
Do you know the story how Halloween has begun?
It is said to have originated from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. Celts lived 2000 years ago in places that nowadays are Ireland, northern France and UK. On 1st November they celebrated New Year and the end of summer. They believed that one day before New Year the boundaries between the world of living and dead became blurred, that’s why they celebrated on the 31st October Samhain. They believed that on that day ghosts of the dead came back to Earth.
Later on the 1st November was designated by Pope Gregory III as All Saints Day, a time to honour all saints. Soon, some Samhain traditions were incorporated to celebrate All Saints Day. The day before All Saints Day was known as All Hallows Eve, afterward changed to Halloween.
Later on, the festive of Halloween has evolved by adding new traditions. Traditions like treat-or-tricking, carving jack-o-lanterns, eating treats, etc. were incorporated to celebrate this holiday. Today Halloween is celebrated all over the world. But, do you know what is celebrated these days in Mexico? Day of the dead – learn more about it in our blog post here.
